The provincial club championships really kicked into life last weekend with some mouth watering games and exhilarating displays in all four Provinces and no question the shock of the club season occurred in Leinster as the mighty St Vincent's were humbled by Wicklow champions Rathnew. Credit to Castlebar Mitchels who qualified for another Connacht club final after getting the job done eventually against Sligo champions Tourlestrane but not without a real scare. Castlebar are not playing with the same fluency and conviction of other years which is slightly worrying from their viewpoint but the most important thing is that they are winning.

The Mayo Senior championship quarter finals threw up a couple of eye catching results over last weekend. It was the first time ever that the four group winners failed to win their quarter finals, although Ballintubber did get through to the semi-final at the second time of asking after Wednesday night's replay with Hollymount- Carramore.

Elite eight get ready to clash this weekend

After one of the busiest weekends in the club calendar last weekend the quarter-finalists in the Mayo GAA senior championships are now known. The defending champions Castlebar Mitchels who were pushed into second place in their group after a Ballina Stephenites saw them off 3-8 to 1-10 last weekend - will face Knockmore in the last eight on Saturday in Ballina at 5pm in a repeat of last years county final. Knockmore were handed the toughest draw of all the table toppers when Mitchels slipped into second place in the table thanks to efforts of Evan Regan and Ciaran Tracey who finished up with 1-3 each in Ballina’s surprise win. Knockmore made it three wins from three in their group with a comfortable 2-11 to 1-9 win over Westport in Castlebar, with Peter Naughton hitting six points for them.

Mitchels look to topple Tourlestrane tomorrow

There is no let up for Mayo kingpins Castlebar Mitchels who have another seven day turnaround this week before they take on Sligo champions Tourlestrane in Markieviciz Park in the Connacht Senior Club Championship quarter-final tomorrow at 2pm. Declan O'Reilly's men were in scintillating form in last Saturday night's Mayo senior final when they ran out 3-13 to 0-10 winners over a valiant Knockmore side who ran out of gas in the second half when Mitchels really put the foot down.
